Dear Students & Parents,

We are almost there!  The school year is just about half over!  Please stay focused on learning Math and Science and doing your best.  Make everyday count! As we approach the Winter Break, please accept my best wishes for a joyful and relaxing holiday with your family.  And a special thank you to all your wonderful parents.  Thank you for your support and for working with your child.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Weekly Post 12/5-12/9

Dear Parents and students, 

Please check your child's planner DAILY and make sure they have their homework in their homework folder to turn in on time. Students who are absent are responsible to make up any missing assignments as stated in the Disclosure Statement. Students have been given MULTIPLE opportunities to make up their work during math time on a weekly basis.  Students also have opportunities to make up their work during Aguilas of Excellence monthly to improve their grade. In addition, students have opportunities to RETAKE quizzes/tests during lunchtime and any day after school except Wednesdays. Please help encourage your student to be PROACTIVE and RESPONSIBLE. I would love to see them to be successful!


Math
We will continue to learn about the Order of Operations (PEMDAS) and to practice solving math expressions. Students will learn and work on the math concepts and practice math skills in the classroom. However, if the math homework is not finished in the class period, the student needs to take it home, finish it completely, and return it the next school day. Ask your student what they did and learned in math that day.

We are working on dividing 2 digit divisors. Students will have division facts quizzes on 6s to 10s. Please continue practicing multiplication facts and division facts with your child at home.

Homeroom-
Parents, please check and sign your child's planner daily. Students do receive participation points for homeroom grade. Each day students earn one point for having planner in class and one point for having parent signature in their planner. We check name tags, uniform, planner, parent signature, and reading minutes, as well as learning and discussing the 7 Habits in homeroom. Students should be in the classroom by 8:10 a.m. 

Math- we are learning about long division. Students will divide 4-digit number dividends by 2-digit number divisors.

If interested in donating supplies, we need the following items for our science experiment: 8 bottles of Elmer's glue, color plastic cups, and food coloring. (Primary colors: red, green, blue, orange, yellow, purple).

It is a short week this school week! We will practice and review multiplying multi-digits with whole numbers.  The fluency of multiplication facts is the foundation for students to be able to multiply multi-digit math problems. Most students are struggling with multiplication facts of: sixes, sevens, eights, nines, and twelves. Below is the link for math multiplication on quizlet.

Dear Parents,

Please train your child to be proactive, and together, check his/her grades on Aspire each week.  Your child has learned how to log in to Aspire and how to print out his/her progress report in Math class. This is something that can be incorporated into your child's weekly home routine.  Students' planners also need to be signed everyday and your child should be reading daily for at least 20 minutes, and record their reading minutes in their planner.

Math
We are working on multiplying multi-digit whole numbers with standard algorithm. Please practice multiplication facts with your child at home. It is essential that students know their multiplication facts in order to do multiplication word problems, and multiply multi-digit whole numbers, or decimal numbers. 3 D Modeling Landforms Project

We will continue learning about how landforms are made when a combination of geologic events occurs, such as uplift and erosion, which forms a canyon. Students will continue building their 3 D Modeling Landforms Project and explain/present forces that caused the landforms to be created. 




Math 

We will learn how to add and subtract decimal numbers and work on Place Value Projects. Last week, students created accounts for Prodigy Math Online Games. Please allow your child to go on the website at home to practice the concepts/skills they learned in class. Science
We are learning about how weathering and erosion affect the Earth’s surface.  We will also talk about how volcanoes, earthquakes, and uplift affect Earth’s surface and work on 3D modeling landform project.  

Math
We are continuing to learn about place value system (see notes at bottom of this post). Students are learning about expanded form, word form, and standard form.  Later this week we will review how to compare decimals and learn about rounding decimals. 

Aguilas of Excellence 
This is a monthly event for 5th and 6th grade that must be earned. Aguilas of Excellence is a rewards program based upon students' overall grades. The Flyer was sent home during the first week of school to explain the details of this program.

We're off to a great start!  Students are getting back in the routine of doing homework and having planners signed.  Thank you, parents for establishing a good study routine at home that also includes online Math & Science games. In Math, we are reviewing Multiplication Facts and learning about place value system this week. In Science we are learning about Scientific Method this week. 


Being on time to class is essential. Majority of 5th graders are now doing much better with their lockers this week. There are still some students have trouble to open their lock during transition time, but overall most of them can open their lockers timely.

Being organized and prepared will help students be successful in class. Please check requested supplies list. 

Donations are appreciated, such as Tissue box, Clorox Wipes, Colored utensils, Glue sticks, any craft and craft supplies.

Welcome back to school!!

Dear Parents & Students,

This is my twelfth year at OPA and I am excited to welcome all of my students to a new year full of possibilities! A new school year is an opportunity to get a fresh start, to establish a good homework/study routine, and to work together, so that we can make this the best year ever!
