Math

We are starting the Fraction Unit this week. Students will learn how to write fractions in words and understand the concept of numerator and denominator. They will also use pictures to represent fractions. Students will also learn equivalent fractions and comparison fractions.

Online Practice (Math Skills)

IXL  LEARNING website  has a list of all of the math skills students will learn in fifth grade. Math skills are organized into categories that your child can practice at home. The questions will automatically increase in difficulty as your child improves. Click the link below to practice Math skills with your child: https://www.ixl.com/math/grade-5

WIGS

Widely Important Goals (WIGs) for 5th Graders is focused on Division Facts this quarter. Our goal is 80% of 5th grade students will achieve at least 80%, or better on their division facts. This week, students will have Division Facts Quizzes on 9s and 10s. Please practice and study with your child at home.

Please continue practice Multiplication Facts on Quizlet at  https://quizlet.com/_2lbmqa

Science

This week, students will compare and contrast permanent magnets, temporary magnets, and electromagnets, and understand that Earth is a permanent magnet and has a magnetic field.  Below is this week's vocabulary words on Magnetism LINC#2

permanent magnet a piece of magnetic material that keeps its magnetism after it is removed from a magnetic field

temporary magnet A material that shows magnetic properties only while exposed to an external magnetic field

electromagnet a temporary magnet made by coiling wire around an iron core; when current flows in the coil the iron becomes a magnet

compare show similarities (sameness)

contrast show differences
