OPA 2017-2018 Week#20 Jan. 15-19

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.” ~ Vince Lombardi

Dear Parents and Students,

We are off to a great start for the new year! Quarter 3 starts this Tuesday, January 16. Please discuss the "3P's" with your child:  Positive, Prepared, Polite.  Having a positive attitude, being prepared with school supplies (pencils, eraser, red pencil/pen, colored pencils or markers, glue sticks and scissors for projects) and using good manners will take your child far in life!

Please continue encouraging your child to work on developing good habits to be a successful learner.  Students should keep all of their supplies in their pencil pouch, which is kept in their Math & Science binder in the classroom.  Make sure daily math In-class/homework assignments are completed and turned in on time. If students are consistently not turning in their work, then it adds up and becomes hard to catch up for a better grade.

HOMEROOM

On Friday, January 12, administrators and teachers reviewed hallway expectations and the dress code with 5th graders. The dress code policies were sent home with your child, stapled in their planner. Please review the dress code policy with your child at home and then sign it and return to Ms. Chiang by Friday, January 19. This assignment is worth 10 points.

Please continue checking and signing your child's planner daily. Please ask them what they have learned in school and encourage them to keep learning. Parent/Guardian's Signature is required for their planner. Students earn 2 points per day by having their planner in class and signed.

In order to participate in the OPA monthly Aguilas of Excellence, students must meet the expectations and have no more than 3 violations for PUNT: Planner, Uniform,Name Tag, Tardy.

  • Planner is expected to be signed daily
  • Uniform is expected to be tucked in at all times during school hours. Please read the dress code policy that was sent home with your child or check your child's planner for more details.
  • Their name tag is expected to be worn on the collar of the uniform. It is important for students to have their name tag in order to make, checking out library books and the lunch scan run more smoothly and timely. It is $5 dollars to replace a name tag or a planner if your child lost their name tag or their planner.
  • Students should be in the classroom when the first bell rings at 8:05 a.m. They should not be socialized with their friends by their lockers and then arrive tardy to classes.

MATH

We are learning about Fractions. Your child took home their math projects: Dodecahedron (All About Fractions) and Fractional Me poster, home with them last Friday. They are graded and returned to the students to keep at home.

Last week, students learned how to change fractions from an improper fraction to a mixed number fraction and from a mixed number fraction to an improper fraction. This week, we are going to use those skills to do adding and subtracting fractions with like (same) and unlike (not same) denominators and then reduce the answer to it's simplest form.

Math vocabulary words and math facts are fundamental tools to solve many math problems in class. When students study math vocabulary words, they understand what the question is asking them to solve and it allows them to have mindful math discussions in class.  When students are fluent in their math facts, they can solve math problem more efficiently and successfully.

A study guide was sent home with your child last Monday on Jan.8. Students can also practice on quizlet from the link below. Please continue practicing the vocabulary words at home. This week students will have an electricity week #2, vocabulary words quiz on Thursday, Jan.18.

OPA 2017-2018 Week #18 & 19 Jan.3-12

" Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right."~ Oprah Winfrey

Welcome Back to School! I hope you all had a restful and fun holiday with friends and family. We are in a new year and have a new beginning!  Let's start the new year with a positive attitude and good daily habits. Please make sure daily math homework assignments are completed and turned in on time. When students are consistently not turning in their work, it adds up then it becomes difficult for them to make it up in time. Please continue checking and signing your child's planner daily and ask them what they have learned in school.

Second quarter will end on Jan. 12 and third quarter starts on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Any missing assignments, test retakes, or make-up work will need to be turned in by Friday, January 12.
