OPA 2017-18 Week#6 Sept.25-29

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to succeed is always to try
one more time."  Thomas A. Edison

Progress Report

The Math and Science Progress Report was sent home last week and was due last Thursday on September 21. If you haven't seen your child's  progress report, please ask he/she about it. Parent Signature is required and it is worth 10 points of their participation grade.

Math

This week, we will learn, and practice adding and subtracting decimals.

For our Math Wildly Important Goals  (WIGS), students will have multiplication fact quizzes on 8, 9, and 10 this week. Please practice with your child at home. We have made Fortune Tellers to practice Multiplication Facts 0-12 in class. Students can also practice on http://www.multiplication.com/  or Math Drill App. (Please see the link, "5th grade Math Resources," on my blog.)

Remember "Fact Families Booklet" & "Multiplications Fortune Tellers" are both due next Tuesday, October 3.

Example of inside page                                  Example of Fortune Tellers

How to play Multiplication Fortune Tellers:
1. Choose one of the colors printed on the outside square (red, blue, green, or orange).2. Open and close (front to back and sideways) once for each letter in the color selected.  For example: red would be opened and closed three times.  3. Choose one of the number words showing, and open and close once for each letter in the number selected. For example: nine would be opened and closed four times.  4. Choose one of the four math problems shown inside and answer it.  5. Lift the flap the question is on and check your answer.  Note: Step 3 can be skipped to make the game move faster.

Science

This week, we will review how valleys are formed and to understand how erosion and deposition work together in changing the Earth. We will continue learning about various formations. Students will complete and present their 3-D land formation project in class.

Earth's Crust Week#4 -Vocabulary Words

expand: spread out; to increase the size, volume, or quantity

valley: a low area of land between hills or mountains; usually with a river or stream flowing through it

volcano: an opening in the Earth’s crust through which molten lava, ash and gas are ejected; usually cone-shaped

uplift: vertical elevation of the Earth's surface, due to natural causes - plate tectonics

“Action is the fundamental key to success.” – Pablo Picasso

ASPIRE

We have been in school for one month and we are half way through first quarter. Math and Science grades are posted and updated WEEKLY on Aspire. Please remember to check the Aspire Gradebook online weekly at home, and as regularly as possible with your child. You can see your child's current grade in his/her classes and upcoming quizzes, or assignments due date.

Math

We will review rounding and comparing decimals and start working on our decimals unit on add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths.

This week for our MATH WIGS (Wildly Important Goals), students should practice multiplication facts on 5s, 6s, and 7s and complete Fact Families Booklet as their homework on Mondays if they didn't finish required sections in class. Students will have multiplication facts quizzes on 5,6, and 7 this week. Please practice facts with your child to help them to reach their goals. We will make Fortune Tellers to practice Multiplication 0-12 in class.  Students can practice on multiplication.com or Math Drill App. (Please see the link, "5th grade Math Resources," on my blog.)

FACT FAMILIES BOOKLET & Fortune Teller Made 2-12 are due on Tuesday, October 3

Science

This week, students will learn about how landforms are made when a combination of geologic events occur, such as uplift and erosion, which form a canyon. Students will build their 3 D Modeling with 15 land formations and explain/present forces that caused the landforms to be created in class. Students can use any materials to create their 15 formations listed. Students can use modeling Magic or  clay for formations, marbles for glaciers, green tissue papers or  green paper crinkle for lands, and etc.

Donations Needed for this project:

Model Magic (White)      or    Modeling Clay (Green & Brown)

Below is an example made by Ms. Chiang:
